Passports
You will need to have a current and valid passport. US passports are issued by the Department of State, but in many regions you can fill out the required forms at your local post office.
To get a passport you will need proof of citizenship, usually in the form of a certified birth certificate, and you will need ID such as a Drivers License or Government ID card.
Dont forget that it may take four to six weeks, and will cost at least $140.
Visas
As long as you are visiting countries that are members of the European Union and you are staying for less than three months, you will not need a visa. If you are visiting any countries outside the EU, check with the individual countries to find out if a visa is required.
If you plan to do any business or sell anything during your holiday in Europe, you will need a visa. If you have any kind of criminal record, you may want to apply for a visa ahead of time even when travelling within the EU, to avoid being turned away at the border.
Check with the nearest consulate or embassy for the country you plan to visit if you are uncertain of your status.
Other Documentation
On the plane, you should be given a customs declaration form, which will need to be filled in, declaring the value and nature of anything you plan to bring into Europe.
When you go through immigration, you may be asked for proof of a return ticket, and proof that you have sufficient funds to support yourself for the duration of your visit. Its a good idea to carry a recent copy of a bank statement as proof.
If you make sure that you have the proper documentation before you board your plane, you can save yourself a lot of stress when you arrive for your holiday.
