Tuscany is one of the most famous Italian regions in the world, and it’s here that many of my favorite wines come from. If you’re travelling through the region, you simply must take a day out of your schedule to indulge in a wine tour. I found it to be a great way to explore the region and enjoy many beautiful sights, all whilst sipping wine and enjoying the odd olive or two.
Italy’s most famous wine must be Chianti, and it’s Tuscany where this iconic commodity comes from. But there are also other wines to be found here too, including Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino, not to mention an entire range of Tuscan wines.
Wine testing tours can vary in length from a few hours to an entire day, and I’d highly advise the latter. Part of the charm of Tuscany is the relaxed and slow life of the place, and being able to indulge in an entire day of wine tasting fits perfectly with the region’s natural ambiance.
The days are well paced so you don’t feel rushed, and the tour guides are normally extremely knowledgeable, providing you with a lot more information than just the wines themselves. In addition, if you take a day-long tour, you’ll also get to indulge in lunch at some point, which is an experience itself. My group was taken to a local butchers were I got to sample some beautiful Parma ham and cheese before continuing with the day’s activities.
Another reason to take a full day’s tour, or an afternoon’s excursion at a minimum, is so you can enjoy the sunset at piazza Michelangelo. The view over Florence was incredible and a sight I’ll never forget, so it’s well worth booking your tour so you can enjoy these extra gems.
Some people might think that a wine tasting tour in Tuscany is just a tourist trap to be avoided. However, this is far from true and I had a fantastic day out enjoying wine, cuisine and the local scenery. I’d recommend a trip to anyone visiting Italy as it’ll be a time to remember forever.
